Associate Professor Sood

Associate Professor Siddharth Sood is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist. He was appointed as the inaugural Head of Hepatology at Northern Health in 2023. He undertook his specialty training at the Liver Transplant Unit Victoria at the Austin Hospital, the Northern Hospital, and the Royal Melbourne Hospitals. Prior to his position at Northern Health, he spent 9 years as Head of Hepatology at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He has particular expertise in the field of liver disease, including autoimmune liver diseases, PBC, viral hepatitis, NASH and is also responsible for management of liver cancer (Hepatocellular carcinoma). He manages many patients with Wilsons disease and PSC.

His previous experience includes as a Visiting Medical Officer at the Northern Hospital, and Clinical Fellow at the Victorian Liver Transplant Unit. He has previously covered as a consultant for the Liver Transplant Unit. He has  a strong research interest in liver disease, and has a PhD from the University of Melbourne. 

​

At the Royal Melbourne Hospital, he was responsible for the Liver cancer (HCC) service, as well as the Liver clinics. He collaborates closely with multiple other departments, including the Cardiology unit in regards to patients following Fontan's procedures, and the Porphyria clinic where he provides specialist hepatology input. He manages many patients with less common liver diseases, including autoimmune hepatitis and Wilsons disease.

At Northern Health he runs the innovative Liver@Home service for patients with decompensated cirrhosis following discharge from hospital.

A/Prof Sood is a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) and the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA).

​

He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Northern Health, Melbourne Private and Victorian Day Procedure Centre, Heidelberg. His colonoscopy skills have been regularly audited through his work at Royal Melbourne & Northern Health, with a >95% caecal intubation rate and an excellent 45% adenoma detection rate (ADR) in screening colonoscopy. He undergoes regular recertification with the Conjoint Committee for endoscopy training.
